Connecting with the 50th anniversary of the Ensemble “Rustavi”, there has been published a very important anthology – “400 Georgian Folk Songs”.

In Georgia, it is difficult to surprise and to inspire with enthusiasm anyone with national polyphony, interesting performance of the folk singing folklore. The great Ensemble “Rustavi” has already been embellishing Georgian culture, the national musical art with its virtuoso singing, astounding the foreign listener with the sonority of our brilliant polyphony in many countries of the world for almost half a century.
The great endowment of the Ensemble and its wonderful head, a brilliant musician and honorable man, Anzor Erkomaishvili in the survival, maintenance and popularization of the Georgian folk song is invaluable.
Only imagine to record unique variants of more than 780 songs, to restore and to record the songs performed by our renowned singers more than 100 years ago, to sound more than 30 TV films, among them my “Sherekilebi” (“The Insane”).
The “Rustavi” is the Ensemble of not only magnificent singers but wonderful people as well. They are not only musicians, but illustrious workers of the Georgian culture, too. The Ensemble “Rustavi” and its artistic director have been performing a truly national deed for five decades.
It is not an easy task to achieve mutual understanding, unity and harmony among the Georgians. But, the Ensemble “Rustavi” attains this easily, with its high professionalism, talent and exquisite musical taste for each member of the Ensemble, separately and all of them together, strongly believes that the Georgian folk song is one of the indispensable conditions of the maintenance of our national identity, our appropriate, worthy existence.
I am sure the Ensemble “Rustavi” will perform for a long time and sweeten us with its art for many years.
